Hi there,
With Halloween a week away, let's have a look at the money lessons hiding in your kid's candy pile, and a candy split your kid can do on Halloween night. Also, you may have seen headlines this week saying Trump Accounts could open up to adults under 40. Here, we're laying out what's actually in place today, what's only been proposed, and what it means for your family.
Let's get into it!

📰 IN THE NEWS
Could Trump Accounts open to anyone under 40?

Brad Gerstner, the Altimeter Capital CEO who helped design Trump Accounts, told the New York Post this week he's working to expand them to anyone under 40, for uses like retirement, education or starting a business. Sen. Bernie Moreno (R-Ohio) says he'll lead the effort in the Senate. President Trump has suggested a separate program for adults instead. For now, it's only a proposal, and eligibility hasn't changed.
IN PLACE TODAY
Open to U.S. citizen children under 18 with a Social Security number.
About 70 million accounts created as of October 8, 2026, including more than 60 million through Treasury auto-enrollment on October 1.
PROPOSED ONLY
Eligibility for anyone under 40.
Use for retirement, education, or starting a business.
Accounts created automatically still have to be claimed by a parent or guardian before anyone can contribute. Money in a Trump Account is generally not available before age 18. After that, the account follows traditional IRA rules.
What this means: Nothing changes for families today. If your kid is under 18, they may already have a Trump Account. We're working on bringing Trump Accounts to UNest, so you can manage one alongside your kid's UNest account. Join the waitlist below to hear first when they're available.

💡 FOR PARENTS
The candy pile is a little economy

When the bag hits the floor after trick-or-treating, kids start sorting and counting their candy. In a recent WorldVillage piece, writer Joel Comm points out that they're judging value, noticing how many pieces they have and negotiating trades, all without realizing it's a money lesson.
It's a simple exercise when you ask a few easy questions while they sort: Which pieces are worth the most to you? Would you trade two of these for one of those? Why?
Once the trading's done, the next question is what to keep for later. The Candy Split below will show you how to teach about saving too.

🍬 THE CANDY SPLIT
Some now, some later
After trick-or-treating, sit down with your kid and split the bag into two piles: one to enjoy now and one to save for later. Your kid makes the call. Then decide together how to use the "later" pile over time, like one piece after dinner or a few saved for a special day.
OUR CANDY SPLIT
Total pieces _______
"Now" pile _______
"Later" pile _______
Pieces from the "later" pile each day _______
1. Dump out the bag and count every piece together.
2. Your kid decides how many pieces go in the "now" pile and how many go in the "later" pile.
3. Put the "later" pile somewhere out of sight, and agree on when your kid can take a piece from it.
Talk about it: Was it hard to put pieces in the "later" pile? Does a piece feel more special when you've saved it for the right moment?
Like the "later" pile, saving money means setting some aside now for your kid's future. Your kid's UNest account is one place to do that.
Deposits are invested according to the account's selected portfolio and are subject to market risk; investments may lose value. UNest custodial accounts are UTMA accounts. Funds belong to the child and must be used for the child's benefit. Control transfers to the child at the age set by state law, typically 18 or 21, and up to 25 in some states. Withdrawals may have tax consequences. Nothing here is investment, tax, or legal advice.
🎁 GIFTING

A treat that lasts
If grandparents and relatives want to send something for Halloween, share your Gifting link instead of more candy. They can send a treat to your kid's account, one that's invested for your kid's future.
Find your link: open the UNest app and tap Gifting on your home page. Family can give without downloading the app or creating an account.
Gifts are invested according to the account's selected portfolio and are subject to market risk. Investing involves risk and investments may lose value.
